I was in the first year of secondary school, 13 years and 25 days old, staying at my grandma’s because my parents were on vacation. I remember the date so precisely because my father made a big deal out of it when I got my first period after their return from vacation. ‘I had become a woman,’ he said, and he took me to a jeweler where we picked out a silver ring that had the date and ‘daddy’ engraved on it.
Back then, I thought it was all a bit excessive and embarrassing. I had simply gotten my first period, something all girls go through; there was no need to make such a fuss about it. But as time passed, I came to appreciate his gesture much more, especially now that he’s no longer with us, and I have this ring with ‘daddy’ on my finger.
Oh no, what’s happening down there?
But on that morning… I had just showered and was standing on a white mat in the bathroom at my grandma’s place. Suddenly, I noticed a few drops of blood on the mat. I remember I had to think for a moment, but soon realized that it meant I had started my period. That also meant I needed a pad before going to school.
My grandma was still in bed, and her hearing aid was on a nightstand next to her. I woke her up and shouted, “GRANDMA, DO YOU HAVE A PAD FOR ME?”. Grandma replied, “Yes, dear, in the top drawer of the desk in the room”. A weird place, but I went to look for it. I couldn’t find it and went back to Grandma to tell her I couldn’t find it. She came with me, pulled open the drawer, took out a notepad, and said, ‘Look, a notepad.’ 😳
After making it clear that I had started my period for the first time, she gave me a sanitary pad. It was probably larger than a diaper, but fortunately, I didn’t have gym class, and it did the job.
