I was in seventh grade, 13 years and 25 days old, and I was staying with my grandmother because my parents were on vacation. The fact that I remember the date so precisely is because my father, upon returning from the holidays, made a big deal out of the fact that I had my period for the first time, 'I had become a woman' and he took me to a jeweler and we selected a silver ring on which the date and dad were engraved.
At the time I thought it was all a bit exaggerated and embarrassing. I just got my period for the first time, all girls do, don't make such a big deal of it. Later I came to appreciate his action much more. Especially now that he's gone and I have a ring with 'daddy' on my finger.
oohjeeh, what's going on down there?
But that morning... I had just showered and was standing on a white mat in my grandmother's bathroom. Suddenly I saw some drops of blood on the mat. I remember thinking for a moment, but I soon realized that that was having my period. Which also meant that I now needed a sanitary pad before going to school.
My grandmother was still in bed and had her hearing aid on a cupboard next to her. I woke her up and shouted: GRANDMA DO YOU HAVE A SANITARY TOP FOR ME? Grandma said: yes, in the top drawer of the desk in the room. Strange place, but I went looking. I didn't find it and went back to Grandma to say I couldn't find it. Grandma walked along, opened the drawer, grabbed a ruler and said: 'Look at a measuring stick'. 😳
After I explained to her that I had gotten my period for the first time, she had a sanitary towel for me. I think this was bigger than a diaper, but luckily I didn't have a gym and it did the job.
